Introduction: SSDI vs. SSI Social Security disability benefits consist of monthly payments and/or medicare benefits which provide compensation to those who are disabled from performing substantial gainful work of any kind. Social Security benefits can be obtained through two programs; (1) Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or (2) Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Both SSDI and SSI have the same medical requirements, to be discussed below. However, SSDI requires a certain amount of credit earned for prior work, whereas SSI is based solely on financial need, regardless of prior work. What is Social Security Disability? A claimant will be considered disabled if he is unable to do any kind of work for which he is suited and his disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year, or result in death. The disability can be due to a physical or mental condition, or a combination of a number of such conditions. If the claimant is found to be disabled, benefits will continue as long as the claimant remains disabled. There is no age requirement for the receipt of disability benefits. If the claimant is receiving disability benefits at age 65, the disability benefits are automatically converted to retirement benefits.
Construction, industrial and other California workers are sometimes injured as a result of workplace accidents. Individuals who suffer from chronic heart or lung problems, AIDS, depression and other similar problems -- or suffer disabilities that are drug or alcohol related are often eligible for Social Security Disability.
